To her adopted father, Mordecai, she was a dutiful daughter who was obedient to his wishes and heedful to his counsels. Xerxes then seeks the advice of anybody found at court. She was a learned woman, yet her husband, Lapidot, was an unlearned, simple laborer.
Ahasuerus was a despot who was also a fool. This counter—edict was addressed to all of the governors in the Persian kingdom, and it informed them that the Jews had been authorized to defend themselves against their persecutors and to kill all those who would attack them.
One, in particular, managed to trick the king into issuing a decree to kill all the Jews throughout the entire Persian Empire. It gives them the right to fight back when their enemies attack them on the 13th day of the 12th month.
This was typical of Persian Rule. It had been thirty days since he had summoned her. Biblical scholars claim Esther from the Bible was penned by either Mordecai or Nehemiah. The Torah describes her in impressive terms: Let the girl who pleases the King be Queen instead of Vashti. Haman filled the king with lies about the Jews, and even offered to pay the king to issue the decree.
In books seven and nine of Herodotus' writings, The Persian Wars, he goes into in-depth detail concerning feasts of Xerxes I. Although the date of her death is not known, Jewish tradition indicates that Queen Esther's tomb is in Hamadan, also known as Ecbatana, located in what is now western Iran.
The Bible is silent as to how her parents died.
Ahasuerus governed by whim rather than by wisdom, becoming the tool of anyone shrewd enough to exploit him. In the time of the Book of Esther, Haman was the one who tried to destroy us.
Such an edict from the king carried a definite sentence with it. The Book of Esther should remind us of the greatness of God and warn us about being too impressed with the greatness of men.53 The reason I say that both Esther and Mordecai were given authority to draft this new law is because the “you” in verse 8 is plural, indicating that the king was speaking to both Esther and Mordecai.
